Emotional Intelligence Breakdown

ree

In a nutshell, it can be described by two components, Addis (2013):

1. Being able to understand & identify your own emotions and self-regulate this mental practice.

2. Understanding & promoting positive relationships with other people.

How is Business using Emotional Intelligence, Boyers (2013):

1.Companies are developing Leaders who can use their knowledge of EI to make subtle but important decisions for the company. In other words, they decide based on their employees' feelings combined with other factors, which creates informed decision-makers.

2.The companies of the future will be those with leaders who can use EI to address three challenges in modern Business: the increasing use of teams, the rapid pace of globalization (allies), and the growing need to retain talent.

3.In Business, you need more than smarts; you need tools like IE to develop long-term relationships built on trust.

Five Competencies of Emotional Intelligence, Goleman (2004):

1.Self-awareness: knowing one's own emotions.

2.Self-regulating: Managing emotions.

3.Motivation: Motivating oneself.

4.Empathy: Recognizing emotions in others.

5.Social Skills: Handling relationships.

Empathy & EI: Addis (2013), Boyers (2013), Goleman (2004)

My technique starts with self-awareness, social awareness, self-regulation, and then, the most difficult for me, empathy for others.

The traits of highly empathic people are:

1.Uses active listening, a technique that completely focuses on the other person or group they are speaking to, no cell phones etc.

2.Skilled at interpreting non-verbal cues.

3.A high degree of EI.

4.Has a good imagination.

5.Is self-aware an acknowledges their own emotions.

6.Is curious and has a genuine interest in other people.

7.Embraces diversity (differences).

8.Non-judgmental.

My own experience with EI the past two weeks:

I have been practicing Emotional Intelligence at home & work; I noticed two key strategies that were successful:

1. Some people will be disagreeable no matter how you treat them; it is just how they are. I had to focus on the EI in terms of myself and very little, if at all, on the empathy part.

2. I could practice the whole concept of EI with people who were in a positive mindset and not faking it.

Conclusion:

Remember that this was only two weeks reflection, but it is an example of how your journey with EI could develop in unexpected ways. I'm sure I don't have it all figured out. It is a process, and you will have many opportunities to practice it in life, so enjoy it.

Timothy Hugh O'Neil
